At Camp Alvernia, we take aquatics safety seriously. To that end, we are offering four additional certification courses for your consideration. Please review the below courses and reach out to the camp office if you’d like to register. Students are registered when payment is received. Let us know if you have any questions!
Want your kids to learn to drive a powerboat? We’re running a comprehensive on-the-water powerboating course for boys and girls ages 10-15 only!
NOTE: This course has been specifically designed for this age group, and there is no prerequisite. This Safe Powerboat Handling course will satisfy the NYS boating license requirement for those boaters born after 1996.

Course Cost: $200 per participant
Interested in getting a great summer job or challenging career as a professional lifeguard? Through videos, group discussion and hands-on practice, you’ll learn teamwork, rescue and surveillance skills, First Aid and CPR/AED and other skills you need to work as a professional lifeguard. This course also includes the waterfront skills module, which allows you to lifeguard at a beach. Successful completion results in a 2-year certification in Lifeguarding that includes first aid, professional-level CPR and AED in one certificate. Recommended Age: 15 - Adult, all students must pass swimming requirements Course Cost: $400 per participant, paid to the camp office prior to the start of the course
Junior lifeguarding has a strong focus on developing swimming skills to help participants meet the Lifeguarding course prerequisite. The course also introduces participants to lifesaving skills, such as in-water rescues, use of a rescue tube, and first aid/CPR/AED. This course is perfect for strong swimmers who want to improve their skills and prepare for a possible future lifeguard certification.

Recommended Age: 11-14 years old
Course Cost: $125 per participant, payable to the camp office prior to the start of the course
This hands on course is for anyone who wants to learn how to safely operate a powerboat or improve their on-the-water boat handling skills and already has or does not need a State Boating Safety Certificate. The course is taught by a US Powerboating certified instructor who covers safe boat operation, docking, close quarters maneuvering, anchoring, navigation rules & navigation aids, safety equipment, emergency procedures, rendering assistance and a host of other topics. The course emphasizes on-the-water practical application of all skills. Please be advised that successful demonstration of practical skills and 80+% score on the written examination are required for certification. No practical boating experience is required. Students will be expected to study the course materials at home.
Students should bring food, as there will not be an opportunity to leave the property. Students should come prepared to go out on the water.
Course Dates: July 23rd & 24th, 4-8pm both days
Recommended Age: 12 years - Adult
Course Cost: $175 per participant

This course incorporates the latest science and teaches students how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies for victims about 12 years and older. Students who successfully complete this course will receive a certificate for Adult CPR/AED valid for two years. NOTE: The NYS Department of Health requires that CPR be renewed yearly for summer camp employees.
